TIRED OF HAVING only one big movie to view at area theaters each weekend? Each July brings a smorgasbord of choices with two or three potential mega-hits vying for box office supremacy. At least two gay directors (Charles Herman-Wurmfeld and Francois Ozon) are represented this month, though not necessarily with queer material.

“ The Cremaster Cycle” — Matthew Barney’s experimental, five-part epic is named for the muscle that raises and lowers a man’s testicles.

“Legally Blonde: Red, White & Blonde” — Elle (Reese Witherspoon) comes to D.C. to lobby for animal rights in the sequel, directed by Herman-Wurmfeld (“Kissing Jessica Stein”).

“Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas” — Four hotties — Brad Pitt, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Joseph Fiennes — voice an animated adventure.

“Swimming Pool” — In Ozon’s mysterious drama, British mystery writer Charlotte Rampling goes to France and is distracted by sexually adventurous Ludivine Sagnier.

“Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines” — Edward Furlong has grown into Nick Stahl (as John Connor). This time the Terminegger has to protect him from a terminatrix (Kristanna Loken as T-X), and the future of civilization is at stake.

trong>July 9
“ Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” — Good pirate Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) chases bad pirate Geoffrey Rush, who hijacked Jack’s ship and kidnapped the governor’s daughter Keira Knightley.

trong>July 11
“ The Hard Word” — Guy Pearce and his two brothers continue their string of robberies while in prison. Rachel Griffiths plays Pearce’s unfaithful wife in Scott Roberts’ hard-boiled crime drama with a comic twist.

“The Heart of Me” — In 1930s England, Paul Bettany is married to Olivia Williams but has an affair with her sister (Helena Bonham Carter).

“The Legend of Suriyothai” — In Prince Chatri Chalerm Yukol’s epic of 16th century Thailand, a queen dies in a battle defending her husband.

“On-Line” — Is cybersex a substitute for relationships, a supplement or a way to hook up? New Yorkers explore the answers in Jed Weintrob’s romantic comedy.

trong>July 18
“ Bad Boys II” — Martin Lawrence will work with Will Smith, but doesn’t want him to marry his sister (Gabrielle Union). Their personal problems interfere as they’re caught in a turf war among Miami drug lords.

“The Embalmer” — A vertically challenged gay taxidermist hires a young hunk to get close to him, but when the hunk takes a girlfriend high drama begins in Matteo Garrone’s Italian film.

“Johnny English” — Rowan (“Bean”) Atkinson is the British Secret Service’s last hope to prevent the theft of the Crown Jewels — by a Frenchman (John Malkovich).

trong>July 25
“ Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life” — Angelina Jolie returns as the heroine/ass-kicking archaeologist, traveling the world in search of a magical and maybe mythical site.

“Seabiscuit” — The true story of the imperfect steed who carried America’s hopes (and jockey Tobey Maguire) during the Depression, with Jeff Bridges and Chris Cooper.

“Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over” — This Robert Rodriguez trilogy concludes with Sylvester Stallone, Salma Hayek and George Clooney joining the usual cast (Antonio, Carla, Alexa, Daryl, etc.) in a story about a virtual reality game.

trong>July 30
“ Gigli” — Together (on screen) for the first time, Ben (Affleck) and Jen (Lopez) play thugs. Romance results after he blows a kidnapping assignment and she’s brought in to clean up his mess.
