“His release is very troubling to the transgender community,” said D.C. transgender activist Earline Budd.

Budd noted that transgender activists attended the arraignment of Antoine D. Jacobs, 22, the District resident charged in Evangelista’s murder. Another Superior Court judge ordered Jacobs held without bond pending his trial. Police charged Jacobs with first-degree murder while armed and listed the murder as a hate crime.

Police said Jacobs told investigators he paid Evangelista for sex and became angered when he learned from someone else a short time later that she was a biological male. He returned to the scene where he left her and shot Evangelista, police said. Police arrested him as he fled the scene on a bicycle, according to records.
