For the past few years, there have really only been a handful of bar options
on the weekends for the bear and leather types in D.C. Of course, there’s
the Eagle, which for decades has served the area’s leather community faithfully.
And, more recently, the Green Lantern has proved a popular watering hole for
the hirsute crowd. Now there’s a third option: Club Ten. Since November,
the club has quickly become a popular spot for bears and leathermen to dance
to the hottest beats. On Saturday, Jan. 3 beginning at 10 p.m., DJ Varner Story
will get the crowd hot and bothered during “Spartan Saturday.” The
party costs $5, and the club is located at 1824 Half St., SW. For more information,
call 202-484-3800 or visit www.tendc.com.
“Here’s to you, Mrs. Robinson.” Dustin Hoffman made his big-screen
debut in the 1967 film version of “The Graduate.” That classic
film — about an older woman who seduces a much younger man — was
more recently updated as a Broadway comedy starring Kathleen Turner as the
naughty Mrs. R. Now, Lorraine Bracco (from TV’s “The Sopranos”)
has taken over the role, and will be performing the show in Baltimore. “The
Graduate” begins its two-week run on Tuesday, Jan. 6 at the Morris A.
Mechanic Theatre, 1 N. Charles St., Baltimore. Tickets cost $20-$57.50. For
reservations, call 410-481-SEAT or visit www.ticketmaster.com. For more information,
call 410-625-4230.
Last summer, thousands of people converged on Washington to celebrate the 40th
anniversary of the March on Washington led by Martin Luther King. On Sunday,
Jan. 11, the Choral Arts Society of Washington presents “I Still Believe,” the
group’s 16th annual choral tribute to King in honor of his birthday.
Joining the group in this remembrance will be the massed choirs of the St.
Paul’s Baptist Church from Richmond, Va., Sandtown Children of Praise
from Baltimore, and national folk figure Odetta. The concert begins at 7:30
p.m. at the Kennedy Center’s Concert Hall, 2700 F St., NW. All seats
are $15. For more information, call 202-244-3669 or visit www.choralarts.org.
