The church does not allow the ordination of practicing gay men and lesbians, but a 1982 statement left the door open for the ordination of those who are not sexually active. The Community of Christ broke from the Mormon church in 1860 and was known as the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints until 2001. It has 250,000 members in 50 countries.
