set up a trust, they still come up woefully short in terms of the rights they would be guaranteed if they could legally wed.

“There is a considerable disparity in income in our working lives and retirement benefits,” Blackburn said. “If Glen died, and I could inherit or receive his retirement benefits after death, that would be a tremendous help. But the government would not allow that. I have to pay higher rates on a relatively low income.”

The couple had a ceremony in a church affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist Association, a gay-supportive denomination based in Boston, and say they had not thought much about marriage since then. Even when marriage rights for gay couples became a hot topic last November, after the Massachusetts Supreme
Judicial Court ordered the state to issue marriage licenses to gay couples, Blackburn and Dehn never thought about getting married because it would not be legally recognized.

When the ACLU approached them about the lawsuit, however, neither hesitated to get involved.

Personal: The couple lives in Riverdale, Md., and have been together for more than two years. They are raising a 14-year-old son from Kebreau’s former marriage, and she is pregnant with the first child they have planned together. The baby is due in October.

When Mikki Mozelle decided that she wanted to ask Lisa Kebreau to marry her, she first sought permission from Kebreau’s 14-year-old son, Alex.

“I wanted to make sure he was OK with it,” Mozelle said. “We were living together already as a family and I’m old-fashioned that way. I wanted him to understand why I wanted him to accept this.”

Alex was very enthusiastic about the idea, and granted Mozelle permission.

The family is like many families. They all eat dinner together every night and Mozelle and Alex are often found playing video games.
