of worship on Capitol Hill with a large number of gay congregants — though it is not specifically aimed at this population. Most gay and lesbian members seem to learn about it through word of mouth.

Unity of Washington’s presiding pastor is Rev. Sylvia E. Sumter, an unassuming Brooklyn native whose sermons emphasize the power of positive thinking and a metaphysical connection to the Bible.

Though issues related to race, ethnicity and sexual orientation rarely are broached from the pulpit, leaders at Unity of Washington, which has a predominantly African-American congregation, note on the church’s Web site: “It is imperative that our ministries and outreaches be free of discrimination on the basis of race, gender, age, creed, religion, national origin, ethnicity, physical disability or sexual orientation.”

Unity of Washington, D.C., belongs to the Association of Unity Churches, a religious movement founded in the 1880s by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore. Its headquarters is in Unity Village, Mo.

BEST MOVIE THEATER

READERS: Landmark E Street Cinema

Blade editors enjoy it when they’re ahead of the readers, and this is one category where the editors got there first. E Street was the editors’ pick for best movie theater in 2004 while the readers chose Loews Georgetown 14. The readers finally caught up with the editors this year, picking this independent movie house in downtown as the best of 2005. Most of the independent and foreign gay films end up playing here, including “Brother to Brother,” “Happy Endings,” “Eating Out” and “Mysterious Skin.” It offers stadium seating and is usually easy to get in and out of, plus there are numerous restaurants in the area to make it a great location for a dinner and movie date. Unlike Georgetown, it is close to two Metro stations (Gallery Place and Metro Center).
