productions get around to addressing gay topics, honest scenes of affection (or sex) between characters often go missing, as when Tom Hanks won the Oscar for his portrayal of a gay man in “Philadelphia.”
That’s why gay movie fans will be jumping out of their seats at the sight of on-screen kisses and even sex between Ledger and Gyllenhaal. Realistic depictions of gay relationships — yes, Will, that means kissing and having sex — are so rare that “Brokeback” deserves four stars for not shying from the challenge.
That credit goes to director Ang Lee, a straight ally if ever there were one. Too bad the film’s stars are now taking their cues from the movie studio’s PR department instead of their director.
