Gay D.C. Councilmember Jim Graham (D-Ward 1) has reintroduced legislation that would make permanent the D.C. Mayor’s Office of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender Affairs, in part to honor the memory of Wanda Alston, who was murdered last month.

Supporters of the bill are hoping its unique wording will also offer protection for heterosexual citizens who have been perceived as gay in that it reads “sexual orientation whether real or perceived,” another difference from the bill’s predecessors. Opponents of the bill, including House Majority Leader Wayne Smith (R-Wilmington) said the bill is pushing a gay agenda. “These are the folks behind this bill who very much have an active agenda,” Smith told the AP regarding the Delaware Liberty Fund’s publicly announced efforts to one day legalize gay marriage in the state.
