This was the biggest year yet for the 6th annual Great Big International Drag King Show, which was held Friday, May 19 at the 9:30 club. More than 1,000 people attended the event, a boost in attendance that show founder and producer Kendra Kuliga (aka Ken Las Vegas) attributes to increased promotional efforts.
The show featured 130 performers in 26 acts from such far-flung places as Canada, the U.K. and Sweden as well as across the U.S. Many local drag kings also performed, as did the local gay male dance troupe, the D.C. Cowboys.
“This year because we had a higher budget, we could pay to have all these people come in from out of the country and that just added to the excitement,” Kuliga says. “People were curious to see what they would do. ... It was a tremendous success.”
