a little nerve-wracking to interview big-name stars, but nothing compares to waiting for the one-and-only Liza Minnelli to pick up the phone. Yet, she was one of the most cordial and delightful interviews, more like talking to an old girlfriend than a living legend. In the Oct. 26, edition, Minnelli reminisced about her godmother Kay Thompson, kibitzed about musical-theater great Fred Ebb and said she thinks gay people understand her work because they have “an appreciation for working through things … When I work on stage, what I’m thinking is ‘I know exactly how you feel.’ Every person in that audience — I’ve been there.”
Our most recent favorite cover is another diva — Eartha Kitt. The best Catwoman ever appeared in the Nov. 9 issue and had lots to say about her fascinating life and her connection to her longtime fans. She also gave one of the better answers to the question of why she has a gay following. Kitt, born to racially diverse parents, said, “I know what the feeling is to be not wanted so you constantly have to prove yourself — to prove that even though your life may be different from someone else’s you still have to be appreciated for what you’ve become.”
