GLAAD should stick to gay rights issues

Re: “Is faggot the new ‘n-word’?” (news, Feb. 2)

I thought GLAAD was a gay rights organization with a limited budget dedicated to fighting anti-gay defamation. As such, I think it should spend those dollars to address anti-gay bigotry! While Michael Richards crossed the line, there are enough organizations dedicated to fighting racism with larger budgets to address such issues in comparison to those that fight homophobia.

Regarding the belief by some black gay activists that, “too many white gays and their institutions remain silent about struggles like racism until a specific reference to a racial struggle ennobles somehow their own cause:” Sadly the same can be said about many blacks in general when it comes to issues like illegal immigration or anti-Semitism.

Washington story was blown out of proportion

Re: “Calling a faggot a faggot” (editorial by Kevin Naff, Feb. 2)

Finally, someone who understands that this was blown out of proportion and that while it is “nice” that people find the word “faggot” to be reprehensible, it means little when the objects of such a word are being legally treated as second-class citizens and many people are standing by while that happens by not putting their pen and vote where their supposed PC sympathies lie.

Democrats must earn their gay votes

Re: “Gay politicos impressed by Edwards, Obama” (news, Feb. 2)

John Edwards and Barack Obama don’t back marriage equality but hey, why should that stop the “gay political observers” from backing them? Come on, the election is nearly two years away — at least make them work for our support!

Why are we piling on Ford?

Re: “DNC gay caucus to push for more delegates in ’08” (news, Feb. 2)

Harold Ford, Jr. supports ENDA and hate crimes laws, unlike his Republican opponent. And like senators Hillary Clinton, John Edwards and Joe Biden, he does not support same-sex marriage. Yet Ford incurs the wrath of national gay elitists and the others get a pass. One has to wonder why.

Gay Dems don’t need Log Cabin’s advice

Re: “Democrat blocks ‘gay’ amendment to wage bill” (news, Feb. 2)

The Log Cabin Republicans proclaim, “LGBT Democrats gave a lot of money and support to their party last November. … Now Senate Democrats better not block the first piece of pro-gay legislation in the 110th Congress.” Yes we LGBT Democrats did give a lot support to the Democratic Party. And we will not have Log Cabin dictating our agenda. We worked to elect Democrats, Log Cabin did not, and we don’t need them telling us our priorities. If you are not on the team, don’t tell us how to run the ball.

Anderson Cooper should be left alone

Re: “Editing Anderson Cooper’s sexuality” (blog post by Kevin Naff, Feb. 2)

Anderson Cooper travels all over the world. He goes to many places where being gay means death. There is no way he can be open and remain an international reporter. As much as you and many others want to notch another openly gay man on your belt it won’t do a bit of good. So do you want another gay man going down in flames when they come out?

For what it’s worth, an entire section of Anderson’s bio is still devoted to speculation about his personal life, but even if the section weren’t there, how are the Wikipedia editor’s comments “blatantly homophobic?” It seems as though you’ve forgotten that “outing” people is a tried and true method for damaging and smearing one’s reputation. It’s not such a “tired old insult” to the majority of the nation.

Michigan case disproves lies of anti-gay right

Re: “Michigan court rules no benefits for gay couples” (washingtonblade.com, Feb. 2)

Do we need any more proof than this court decision to disprove the lies by opponents of same-sex marriage that constitutional amendments banning them don’t affect other unions or benefits for same-sex couples? They use lies and deception to get the public and government to support such measures under the guise that they are limited in scope. Then after they pass they say its application is all encompassing. We need to highlight these court decisions when fighting such amendments on both the state and federal level in our fight against them.
