is single,” said Driscoll. “I can’t think of any U.S. presidential or vice presidential candidate who was single in the past 100 years or more.

“Except for her being a 50-something spinster and speculation that she may be a closeted lesbian, Rice would have been a far more obvious choice for McCain’s VP than Sarah Palin.”

Driscoll and others who thought Rice would have been a better vice presidential choice dismiss arguments by some political pundits that McCain couldn’t select Rice because she is too closely associated with Bush. They argue that Rice is perceived to be a foreign policy expert who shares McCain’s views on the Iraq war and would not be seen as having anything to do with Bush’s domestic policy, including the current Wall Street financial crisis.

In his blog report, which cites accounts by Republican Party insiders, Halperin said that pragmatic, traditional Republican strategists lamented the fact that someone like Rice — who they believe to be highly qualified to be vice president — had to be dropped from consideration due solely to the gay rumors.

“Once Obama selected Biden instead of Hillary, they had this theory that Condi was the perfect candidate to put up against him,” Halperin quoted his source as saying.

“She’s tough, conservative and a hawk, not to mention a football fanatic, which would be more than enough for white men,” Halperin quoted his Republican source as saying.

“They never expected traditionally Democratic blacks and women to vote for her in large numbers, but argued that if she could just sway 5 to 10 percent of blacks and 10 percent of women to defect, it could be enough to tilt the election towards McCain in a number of crucial swing states,” Halperin quoted his source as saying.

“It was the persistent rumors about her sexuality that ultimately killed her chances and removed her from the list,” Halperin quoted his source as saying.

“In Washington circles, it’s just assumed that Rice is gay and nobody really cares,” he said his source told him. “But in the glare of the media spotlight, those rumors were bound to get magnified a thousand fold and the mainstream media would have had an excuse to reveal the facts that would have caused conniption fits among the Republican base.”

I strongly feel that 'outing' someone should be 'qualified' before being implemented. For example, if someone is gay, but denies it, that's their business, not mine. They obviously have things to work out in the depths of their being. On the other hand, if that same person's words and deeds are contributing to the erosion and disenfranchment of the rights of people who happen to be gay, they should not only be outed, but pilloried!

I agree with you 1000%, Zaidi. Someone should come out of the closet only when he/she is comfortable to do so. If it is the case with Condi, then more power to her and she can come out when she's ready (or not). It is not my or anyone else's place to make the decision for someone else to have a Diana Ross-themed moment. But you are asking for all your cards to be pulled if you are a gay-bashing politician (Craig) or some homophobic in public life acting as if you were "straight".
