backed state constitutional bans on same-sex marriage, to Gov. Martin O’Malley, who threw gay Marylanders under the bus, too many Democratic politicians take gay votes and money for granted.

Given the economic crisis and two festering wars, Obama’s first priorities won’t be related to gay rights. But with larger Democratic majorities in Congress and an Obama administration in the White House, gay Americans are right to expect movement on ENDA, a repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and more. Our congressional allies will assuredly try to placate gay voters with passage of the hate crimes bill. That’s a nice to have; ENDA is a need to have.

Maybe if the federal government shows leadership on these fundamental issues of fairness and the nation’s president sets a gay-friendly example and tone, we won’t have to fight costly battles like Prop 8 in the future.

Obama brings us hope that one day we will talk about where we were when same-sex marriage was legalized.

Until then, the long struggle for equality under the law continues. There will be victories, as in Connecticut, and there will be setbacks, as in California. But we are on the right side of history and now we fight with an ally in the White House.

Kevin, you failed to cite one interesting reality. Of course, we all know that Black voters helped Obama win; however, those same Black voters in California resoundingly voted in favor of Proposition 8. Commentary: Well, at least the latter half of their vote was correct!!

Boycotting Utah is a fine, but largely symbolic move. What would have a much greater impact, and perhaps effect, would be a well organized and prolonged boycott of Mormon-owned businesses across the country. For example, I think pro-marriage equality folks contribute a heck of a lot more to the Hyatt Hotels bottom line than they do to the State of Utah's. A portion of every dollar spent at a Hyatt property goes to help the LDS fight equality. We should deny themj that money.
