The D.C. police department’s Gay & Lesbian Liaison Unit was recently involved in the following cases. The GLLU assists in a wide variety of cases and its involvement does not imply any person or business is gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.
• POLICE ASSISTANCE: A business owner requested GLLU assistance Dec. 4 regarding neighborhood relations. The woman, who owns a club along the 2200 block of Rhode Island Avenue, N.E., told police that she had “received a couple of complaints from area residents, which she believes are based on the club’s lesbian patrons.” Police gave the woman advice and referred her to the Alcohol Beverage Regulation Administration.
• PROPERTY DAMAGE: Police were called Dec. 5 at 8 a.m. to a home near the intersection of Portal Drive and Kalmia Street, N.W., to respond to reported destruction of property. A man told police that an acquaintance scratched his vehicle.
• VERBAL ATTACK: A man reported to the GLLU on Dec. 6 that his friend was the victim of an assault. The man told police that his friend was at the Takoma Park Metro station Dec. 1 when a group of juveniles confronted and berated him using homophobic language. Police referred the victim to the Metro Transit Police Department, which is investigating the incident.
• RECKLESS DRIVING: While on patrol Dec. 8 at 2:30 a.m. near the intersection of 13th and U streets, N.W., an officer saw two vehicles speeding. Eventually, police arrested the drivers of both vehicles and both were charged with reckless driving. The two women told police they were speeding because they were verbally attacked and called homophobic names at a club in the 2400 block of 18th Street, N.W.
