D.C. poetry fans are in for a treat with the appearance of Lucille Clifton on May 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Folger Shakespeare Theatre.
Known for a spare style that has been likened to Emily Dickinson and Gwendolyn Brooks, Clifton’s poems feature seemingly simple language and rhythm to create strong imagery. Poems often explore femininity, with perhaps her most well known being the powerful “homage to my hips.”
Clifton currently serves as distinguished professor of humanities at nearby St. Mary’s College in St. Mary’s City, Md. Although she was born in New York, Clifton moved to Maryland in 1971 and eventually became the state’s poet laureate.

Gay cops aren’t so unusual and in a city like Washington, where gays are fortunate enough to have their own liaison unit within the force, the idea is even less foreign. However, that doesn’t mean being an out police officer is easy.
For the 12th year, a conference on the subject of gay criminal justice workers will be held during National Police Week. The five-day conference stretches from May 10 to 15 at George Washington University’s conference center.
Events will include a film about meth use among gays, a talk on self-care and a popular forum discussion about coming out in law enforcement. Keynote speakers include Judy Shepard and David O’Malley, the police chief who handled Matthew Shepard’s murder investigation.
Cafritz Conference Center, 800 21 St., NW, www.midatlanticgoal.org. $250.
