In a Monday interview with ABC News, Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama commented on the same-sex marriages taking place in California.
Obama reaffirmed his opposition to same-sex marriage. But later in the interview, when asked whether he was bothered by what California was doing, he said no.
Obama has pledged to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which prevents married gay couples in Massachusetts and California from accessing the federal benefits of marriage.
When asked whether same-sex nuptials happening in California have changed his opinion on DOMA, Obama said “no.” But then he said, “I still think that these are decisions that need to be made at a state and local level,” even though DOMA is a federal law.
“I believe that marriage is between a man and a woman,” Obama said, “but I also think the same-sex partners should be able to visit each other in hospitals, they should be able to transfer property, they should be able to get the same federal rights and benefits that are conferred onto married couples.”
Obama reiterated that he is “a strong supporter of civil unions.” The presidential candidate promised as president to ensure the federal government is not discriminating and to “maintain the federal government’s historic role in not meddling with what states are doing when it comes to marriage law.”
