Thompson. Based on the novel by Evelyn Waugh, the plot of the film will focus on the relationship between narrator Charles Ryder and his female love interest, Lady Julia Flyte. The novel delicately hints at a relationship between Ryder and his good friend, Julia’s brother, Sebastian. Tensions rise between Sebastian and Ryder over the particulars of their friendship, which are left to interpretation.
From gay director Alan Ball comes “Towelhead,” a drama about a 13-year-old Arab-American girl who is struggling with her own sexual awakening. Her conservative father and odd friendships with older neighbors (Aaron Eckhart and Toni Collette) don’t help. Ball, creator of “Six Feet Under,” often includes gay themes and characters in his works. “Towelhead” hits theaters on Aug. 8.
In “Hamlet 2,” opening Aug. 22, failed actor-turned-drama-teacher (Steve Coogan) puts together a politically incorrect musical follow-up to Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” at a Tucson, Ariz., high school. There’s a gay student, and the Gay Men’s Chorus of Tucson provided the soundtrack for the film.
EXPECT A SLEW OF GAY films this summer at film festivals, and if you’re not able to make it to a festival, keep your eyes open for the films coming to DVD. Some of the offerings have been gaining advanced buzz.
Remember “Another Gay Movie?” Director Todd Stephens is back with “Another Gay Sequel: Gays Gone Wild.” Andy, Nico, Jarod and Griff return, but this time they’re in Fort Lauderdale for spring break. The contest they participate in requires them to attain the most “buttlove” that they can muster over the course of their vacation. Will it make you laugh or cry? Only time will tell.
Another film on the festival circuit this summer is “Breakfast with Scot,” about a closeted (but living with his partner) sportscaster who, when a good friend dies, ends up with custody of her 11-year-old son. The newly adopted boy is showing early signs of a homosexuality that threatens lead character Eric’s (Thomas Cavanagh) life in the closet.
“Chris & Don: A Love Story” is a documentary about Christopher Isherwood, gay author of the book that inspired the musical and film “Cabaret” (among other works), and his partner Don Bachardy, an American
