Like most black Americans, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama opposes same-sex marriage. A series of recent polls show low support among blacks for gay marriage and civil unions. (Photo by Rick Bowmer/AP)

Series on black views of gay issues is exploitative

Re: “Black opposition to gay marriage remains strong” (news, July 11)

Blacks show the highest opposition to gay marriage? No kidding! That is because blacks are the most brainwashed by religious views that were used to keep them down. It is also why religious people throw their children out of their homes for being gay and sit in pews and ignore the fact that their choir director and many other male members are gay. Ignorance is bliss. Ignorance, religion and intolerance thrive in the black community, and that is why there is such strong opposition is to marriage.

The reason that blacks oppose gay marriages is because we are taught as children that it is a sin for someone to be gay. I do not believe God made people this way. If he speaks about it being a sin in the Bible then why would he make people that way? It would be like he made a mistake when he told his prophets to write that and we know that he is the one person who does not make mistakes. I have nothing against gay people. For the person who said that blacks are not into marriage that was an ignorant response. I am black and just to let you know my parents are married and were married before they had me or my two sisters.

Everyone has the right to not like something, just like the KKK doesn’t like anyone who is not white. I strongly oppose allowing gay marriages in Florida, where I live. My oldest sister is gay and my family accepts her and her lifestyle. There is nothing wrong with not accepting gay marriages. Everyone knows that marriage is a sacred vow between a man and a woman. If you read the Bible it tells you God made woman so man wouldn’t be alone and they could concieve. Before you start stereotyping people take a good look at the world in general. There are a lot of out-of-wedlock children who are not black. I will pray for you because your ignorance shows. No matter what you feel I still love people of all races. I think in general we are all good but we are taught ignorance. No matter if you are gay or straight we are all his children and I pray for everyone.

Leave it to the Washington Blade to exploit and stoke racial tensions among the African-American and gay communities. I’ve learned that, depending on your perspective, statistics can be used to prove or disprove just about any position. In your three-part series on the black perspective of gay rights, it’s pointed out that “black Americans remain steadfastly opposed to gay unions,” with as many as two-thirds against gay marriage. I am suspicious as to why the opinions of black Americans were singled out and why Sen. Barack Obama’s mug shot is so prominently displayed with the article. Blacks only make up less than 12 percent of the American population. On a whole, the majority of Americans do not embrace the concept of same-sex marriage, evident by the prohibition by statute or prohibition by constitutional amendment of same-sex unions enacted by a vast majority of the states.

Liberals are once again undermining each other

Re: “Gay man seeks to undermine Obama” (news, June 20)

I’ve always said that the difference between The Left and The Right is that when The Right decides to “circle the wagons” they know to shoot outward rather than inward.

Attack on Hillary was unfair, stereotypical

Re: “Diva worship” (guest editorial by James Kirchick, July 4)

This is reductive, stereotypical nonsense that demonstrates more self-loathing than it highlights.

"I think in general we are all good but we are taught ignorance." The irony! It burns! Anyway, if you read the Bible, you'll see that marriage in the Bible is between a man and one or more wives or concubines, including rape victims, POW sex slaves, and wives acquired by purchase from their fathers. You'll also see that according to the Biblical morality that you love so much, slavery is acceptable but regulated. If that's not a moral code that you want society to follow, stop cherry-picking the Bible.

To the person spouting off about marriage and God and the bible--sweetie, marriage in the USA is not a religious thing. No one needs any version of any god or bible to marry. We are a SECULAR government and religion is irrelvant in the marriage contract. So now go back to worshipping your rock or android or whatever you bow down to, and shut up.
