Janet Jackson opens her ‘Rock Witchu Tour,’ her first in seven years,
next month. She plays Washington in mid October. The singer said her
set list will cover a wide swath of material touching on more than 40
songs total, probably many in medleys as she’s done on past tours. (Janet photo by Evan Agostini/AP)

Each month of this fall, a different pillar of grandeur will play the Verizon Center (www.verizoncenter.com). Celine Dion, the oft-mocked “greatest singer in the world,” will play on Sept. 8, Janet Jackson brings her “Rock Witchu Tour,” her first in seven years, on Oct. 15 and Tina Turner, despite no new album to promote, rounds out the awesomeness on Nov. 23 with her “Tina: Live in Concert Tour,” her first since supposedly “retiring” from touring eight years ago.
Several lower-key female artists might not become the divas of tomorrow, but are worth checking out today. Rufus Wainwright’s sister Martha Wainwright will play 9:30 on Sept. 10 and Rilo Kiley front woman Jenny Lewis performs her California Americana at the Historic 6th and I synagogue on Oct. 2.
Fragile Swede Lykke Li will be as coyly seductive as ever at the Black Cat on Oct. 19. Her latest single might implore listeners to “Dance, dance, dance” but her sound as a whole is better suited to making out.
