Standing with a maverick
Why Sen. McCain’s election is good for all Americans — including gays and lesbians.

ELECTIONS ARE ABOUT choices, and this year the choice for president couldn’t be clearer. Both candidates talk about the need to change Washington, but only one candidate has the record, political courage and common-sense solutions to the challenges facing our nation.

Many on the left are trying to caricature a John McCain presidency as “Bush’s third term.” Nothing could be further from the truth — especially for LGBT Americans. Sen. McCain, unlike George W. Bush in 2004, earned Log Cabin’s endorsement because he’s an inclusive Republican who is committed to returning the GOP to its core unifying principles and ending the party’s disturbing fixation on divisive social issues.

Log Cabin has proven our willingness to stand up to members of our own party to do what is right. We took on Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney during the primaries. We stood on principle in 2004 by refusing to endorse the re-election of George W. Bush. No one knows better than Log Cabin the type of divisive campaign run by President Bush in 2004. Our organization can speak with authority when we say John McCain’s campaign bears no resemblance to that divisive campaign.

MORE THAN A few gay and lesbian Democrats have told me privately of their plan to vote for McCain. He will receive much stronger support from our community than Bush. More voters are reaching the conclusion that Sen. McCain is the right man to lead our country. His election will be good for all Americans — including LGBT Americans.

First, McCain is a maverick — a different kind of Republican who’s willing to buck his own party to stand up for what he believes. Case in point is his consistent opposition to the Federal Marriage Amendment.  He’s the only candidate in this race who paid a political price for voting in a way that benefits the LGBT community. Social conservatives still distrust McCain because of his vote on the FMA. On other issues too, McCain shows a willingness to stand strong; regardless of the political consequences. From immigration reform to the Iraq troop surge to campaign finance reform to global warming, McCain is a maverick who will stand up for his beliefs.

Second, McCain is a real reformer. Throughout his career, he has built bi-partisan consensus on many critical issues. For him, change is more than a campaign slogan, change is the foundation for his 25-year political career.

Third, Sen. McCain has a better plan to jumpstart our troubled economy. Even in the midst of a difficult economic situation, Barack Obama’s first instinct is to raise taxes. His tax plan and his opposition to free trade are a jobs killer. His proposal to increase capital gains taxes and lift the cap on Social Security taxes will cause more economic problems.  McCain, on the other hand, will maintain low taxes and cut spending. He also pledges comprehensive regulatory reform of the financial system. Plus, McCain supports allowing people to invest part of their Social Security taxes. These private accounts can be left to one’s partner — something prohibited under the current system that Obama defends. McCain also supports ending the discriminatory death tax — a tax that hits gay couples particularly hard.

FOURTH, McCAIN’S HEALTHCARE reform plan would increase competition, lower prices and improve access. His plan allows people to purchase insurance across state lines thus increasing competition. McCain’s proposal emphasizes individual ownership of health insurance, rather than relying on employers. This provides stability after a job loss. And it’ll prevent discriminatory practices against gay people by an employer.  McCain’s plan also equalizes the tax disparity gay couples face with the current system.

Fifth, he’ll provide a strong voice challenging the radical Islamic regimes that criminalize same-sex behavior — and even execute gay people. McCain wants to confront tyrants like Iran’s president. Obama wants to talk to him without preconditions.

Finally, McCain has the experience to be an effective commander in chief. With Russia’s growing influence, the threat from nuclear proliferation, the continuing challenges in the Middle East and the threat from terrorism, many LGBT voters want an experienced president answering the 3 a.m. phone call.

Given McCain’s political courage, his record of accomplishment and his common-sense agenda for America, it is easy to understand why he will receive strong support from LGBT voters.

Patrick, Please stop dreaming and getting us to drink this HORRIBLE KQQL AID served up by the McCain's

Don't acknowledge us in private. Do it in public like Democrats do

If you read comments. Answer this one.

How many minorities are in the LCR and are they visible?

I don't understand the logic of this group

Wow. If you tell a lie long enough, does it become true, or are you simply deluded? Obama is not the savior, but McCain is certainly more of the same.

you gay republicans are a joke! Bush and the republicans have been in charge for the last 8 years, and look at the mess they've created! Do you really think Sarah Palin is qualified to be President? Even a lot of republicans dont!

Patrick, It's fine if you want to be a Republican, but please don't pretend that McCain or the Republican party are not incredibly hostile to LGBT Americans. Did you even read your own party's platform? It's an insult to our intelligence to tell us what a great champion of LGBT rights McCain is. The base of YOUR party is made up of Anti-Gay religious zealots and racial bigots and that's who your candidate has chosen to embrace. Please just say that you don't care about LGBT issues and support your candidate. Then at least I could attempt to have some respect for your position.

few Pronunciation[fyoo] 1. not many but more than one More than a few = more than one. I suppose you're technically correct. And he is the original maverick - wow - even more experienced than I thought. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Maverick_(colonist) Yes - he's made speaking to radical relionists a keystone of his foreign policy - he may have even discussed gay rights with the Barbary Pirates. Really Patrick - this guy can't even talk to conservative bigots in this country on gay rights - he ain't brining the issue to the mideast. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Barbary_War

"Case in point is his consistent opposition to the Federal Marriage Amendment. He’s the only candidate in this race who paid a political price for voting in a way that benefits the LGBT community." Yes, because it's so much more preferable that our rights be curtailed by state anti-marriage constitutional amendments, which McCain supports. Cause he's, you know, such a maverick.

This is the same group that used to endorse Jesse Helms. In a way, you have to admire LCR for their eternal optimism, but if they think we're better off with Republicans in power they're smoking something awfully strong.

Patrick, great article. I agree with you wholeheartedly. Last thing we need is an inexperienced uppity at the helm. As a gay man, I've proudly voted GOP my whole life based on their core principles and values, and my partner and I look forward to seeing McCain in the White House 1/20/09.

Yeah...replace Uppity with the n-word and you see exactly what rpcv84 is cowardly dancing around.

CSFW and ReasonableDoubt: My politics are not single issue-focused, i.e. based on sexuality. If you are that narrow-minded then I understand why my post offended you. I encourage you to declare yourself as a GOP'er. I know, it's hard to do that as a gay person, but I've lived all my life as a GOP'er and GAY and, God knows I've not suffered emotionally, financially, or socially. We have a lot to offer: funding the strongest national defense possible, limited government (even though I'm a part of the Federal bureaucracy with a nice-paying job here in DC), (see next post)

Cont'd from below: reducing entitlement programs (i.e., having everyone earn their way in society…anathema to many who have grown accustomed to relying on handouts), supporting the expansion of big business with limited taxing enabling them to hire, hire, and hire away, and a multitude of other very attractive foundation principles. It's easy to convert; and, you may feel as if a burden has been lifted…. And, your assertion, ReasonableDoubt, about the "n-word" is ludicrous, for I'm a racial minority myself...

rpcv84: Nor are mine. None of that changes that fact that you are a racist. McCain has 8 houses, 13 cars, 3 gold carts, and a private jet. Obama has one hybrid SUV and 1 house, and yet you call him an elitist. That is Conservative code for the n-word, and you are a coward for hiding behind it.

ReasonableDoubt: And Al Gore uses how many watt hours to light his extravagent lifestyle? And, how many square feet is the house of the "champion of poverty" - John Edwards??? It doesn't matter to me what your skewed vision is. But, I wouldn't cast aspersions about someone else's beliefs without making sure yours are beyond repute.

Maverick my ass. More like a fanatical Christian Right-wing, George W. Bush kiss-ass suck up! Look it: it's not narrow-minded to oppose the ticket who seeks to do us harm. [Just read the Republicans Official Platform on marriage.] Rextrek, Pwilkens, Ray all have it right! Great comments. Hopefully all intelligent bglt perople will not be DUPED by the flavor of the week Palin; or "Maverick" McCain; or this momentary surge that the Republicans are riding. It feels like this election is all or nothing. And if people are stupid enough to vote these idiots into office - GO Hillary 2012.
