Days after Brad Pitt donated $100,000 to defeat Proposition 8, the ballot initiative that would ban same-sex marriage in California, Steven Spielberg followed suit, Variety reported this week.
The prominent director and his wife, Kate Capshaw, jointly donated Monday the same amount as Pitt to the No on 8 effort. Pitt made his donation last week.
Celebrities such as Ellen DeGeneres and her new wife, Portia de Rossi, as well as George Takei, have increased visibility for married gay couples. But some have questioned why Holly-wood’s other prominent gay figures haven’t yet donated.
The Huffington Post recently reported that among the missing are Rosie O’Donnell; Sir Elton John, who has a civil partnership with David Furnish; and Melissa Etheridge, who has a domestic partnership with actress Tammy Lynn Michaels.
Other Hollywood figures who donated include Bruce Cohen, producer of the upcoming Harvey Milk biopic “Milk,” Max Muchnick of “Will & Grace,” and David Geffen, a DreamWorks partner.
The call for more celebrity donations has been fueled by recent reports that Proposition 8 supporters are donating more money than those who want same-sex marriage to remain legal in California.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the Yes on Prop. 8 campaign has raised $17.8 million, while the No On 8 campaign has raised $12.4 million.
