Gay D.C. Council member Jim Graham (D-Ward 1) announced Monday that he’s temporarily giving up responsibilities for legislative oversight of the city’s taxicab industry, including the D.C. Taxicab Commission.
Graham’s announcement, which came in a letter he sent to Council Chair Vincent Gray (D-At Large), follows the indictment of Graham’s chief of staff, Ted Loza, on charges that Loza accepted bribes and free trips from a taxi company official who was an FBI informant.
The indictment against Loza alleges that he received bribe money in exchange for promising to advocate for legislation beneficial to the taxi company official. Law enforcement sources have said Graham is not a target of the investigation, and Graham has said Loza never talked to him about taxi-related legislation.
In his letter to Gray, Graham asked the Council chair to reassign the taxi industry oversight he had been responsible for as chair of the Council’s Committee on Public Works & Transportation to the Council’s Committee of the Whole, which Gray chairs.
“Though I have committed no crime, nor am I reportedly the target of any investigation, I want to ensure that Taxicab Commission oversight continues without any distractions relating to the Ted Loza indictment,” Graham wrote.
