Morandi: Master of Modern Still Life

The latest exhibition at the Phillips Collection, “Morandi: Master of Modern Still Life,” opens Saturday. The paintings on display will span the Italian artist’s work from 1913 to 1960.

Morandi’s simple compositions stem from his lifelong commitment to the study of objects.

“This exhibition provides a rare opportunity to encounter afresh the intimate and unadorned compositions of this great modern master,” said Dorothy Kosinski, director of the Phillips Collection in a press release. “It also shines a valuable spotlight on Morandi’s stylistic development through fine examples of his early work, an aspect little known or seen in this country.”

The Phillips Collection is located at 1600 21st St., N.W. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursdays until 8:30 p.m.; Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Repeal Prop 8

Three queer bands — Trophy Wife, Mirror script and Equinox — will take the stage at the Black Cat on Tuesday to protest the passage of Proposition 8, the California gay marriage ban.

Proceeds from the show will benefit Join the Impact, the grassroots organization formed in response to Prop 8’s passage.

Trophy Wife has headlined Mothertongue: Women’s Spoken Word and other progressive-themed events in the past. Band member Katy Otto runs local label Exotic Fever Records.

“Repealing Prop 8 is about a basic commitment to equality and justice, especially in this country, where our constitution apparently guarantees these things. Gay marriage is one among many, many rights that people deserve to have as long as our government empowers itself to make these kinds of decisions,” said Diane Foglizzo, who also plays in Trophy Wife.

All-boy band the Mirror script plays moody pop and features a gay member, Steve Scarlata, on drums and vocals. Hugh McElroy, who served in past D.C. bands Black Eyes and Hand-Fed Babies, now plays the melodica alongside lead Saran Malene M. and Sean Peoples in Equinox.

The show starts at 9 p.m., and admission is $8. The Black Cat is located at 1811 14th St., N.W.

Gay Games rally

Washington is one of four cities competing to host the ninth Gay Games in 2014. Bids from the cities are due March 1. The District will compete against Boston, Miami and Cleveland to host these “gay Olympics.”

There will be a rally in support of D.C.’s bid this Saturday. A cultural festival will also take place. Both events will be held at the Kennedy Recreation Center at 1401 7th St. at 11 a.m.

There will be giveaways including tickets to this year’s Night Out at the Nationals on July 20, gift certificates to local bars and a free registration to the 2010 Gay Games in Cologne, Germany.

The program features acknowledgements of sponsors Team D.C., the Greater Washington Sports Authority, Destination D.C. and others.

Chicago was the last U.S. city to host a Gay Games in 2006.

The Gay & Lesbian Outreach and Engagement at the Washington, D.C. Jewish Community Center presents the return of the Masquerade & Mischief Purim Party on March 7. Doors will open at 9 p.m.

The “gender-bending night of frivolity and flirtation” celebrates Purim, the Jewish holiday that celebrates the deliverance of the Jewish people from Haman’s plot to annihilate them. The festivities will include food and libations.

Tickets may be purchased online through washingtondcjcc.org/gloe. They are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Costume is optional but encouraged.
