The D.C. police department’s Gay & Lesbian Liaison Unit was recently involved in the following cases. The GLLU assists in a wide variety of cases and its involvement does not imply any person or business is gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.
• HARASSMENT: A man reported to the GLLU on March 1 that his ex-boyfriend was harassing him. The victim told police that the suspect, who he dated more than two years ago, was creating profiles on adult-oriented web sites using the victim’s personal information and photographs. Officers are working with the web sites and the U.S. Attorney’s Office to assist the victim.
• PROSTITUTION: Police were called March 1 at 3:30 a.m. to the area of Fifth and K streets, N.W., to respond to a reported prostitution-related complaint. Officers found about five “members of the transgender community” in the area. Officers attempted to make contact with the people, but they refused to stop. Officers left the scene and were called again 30 minutes later for the same complaint. No arrests were made.
• POLICE ASSISTANCE: A man requested GLLU assistance Feb. 26 regarding an officer complaint. The man, who was arrested the previous evening following an investigation along the 1300 block of Euclid Street, N.W., regarding reported threats, told officers that he wanted to make a complaint against the officers who handled the arrest. The man “felt he was arrested solely based on his sexual orientation.” Officers provided the man multiple ways to file a complaint.
• POLICE ASSISTANCE: A person requested police assistance Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. after sighting a burglary suspect. Officers stopped the suspect near the 1200 block of Ingraham Street, N.W., and the suspect was later identified as the person who committed a Feb. 10 home burglary. While the suspect was being processed at the police station, officers were unable to determine the suspect’s gender. The suspect was handled in accordance with the department’s Handling Interactions with Transgender Individuals order.
• THEFT: Police were called Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. to respond to a reported theft. A man told police that he met a resident along the 1800 block of Kalorama Road, N.W., a man that he’d met online. Upon returning home, the victim realized his wallet was missing. The victim told police that he contacted his credit card company and learned one of his cards had already been used at a local hotel. The suspect was described as a white man, about 47 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall, 165 pounds, with dark eyes and dark and gray hair.
