E-mail claims Catania plans to introduce marriage bill in April

An e-mail circulating among the city’s gay-supportive religious leaders says D.C. Council member David Catania (I-At Large) plans to introduce a bill to legalize same-sex marriage in early April.

But Catania spokesperson Ben Young said Wednesday that Catania “has not come to any definitive decision on a date” for introducing his long-planned same-sex marriage bill.

The circulating e-mail, sent March 19 by Rabbi Robert Saks of D.C.’s gay synagogue Bet Mishpachah, says, “Rev. John Wimberly and I met yesterday with Councilman David Catania. He is preparing to introduce legislation around April 7 which would legalize same-sex marriages in D.C.”

Saks says in his e-mail that Catania is expecting opposition to the bill from conservative clergy and was seeking support for the legislation from other clergy.

“I am turning to you to recruit your assistance, and to ask for your guidance with the names of other ministers in the Christian community who might support this effort,” Saks says in the e-mail.

Saks could not be immediately reached by phone and did not immediately respond to an e-mail seeking comment.

Some gay activists have urged Catania not to introduce a same-sex marriage bill until local and national gay groups better prepare for fighting an expected ballot referendum to overturn the bill. Activists have also said they need more time to organize opposition to an expected effort by members of Congress to invoke congressional authority to overturn a D.C. gay marriage bill.

Catania, aren't there any economic, social, crime, etc., issues you could more productively spend your legislating time on??

I say we go for it!  Catania is willing to lead, not follow.  Our community has been way too timid on this issue here in the district.  Congress is controlled by Democrats.

Yes, but other people can do more then on thing at a time, trong>Sanchez.  It's called multi-tasking.  And in this case, Catania is doing so while fulfilling the wishes of those who put him in office.  You know, what elected officials are supposed to do.

there is the issue of strategy. some of the opponents to going forward at this time are members of the community, some of the brightest, who feel that this move could serve to jeapordize ENDA in congress...kind of a tit for tat. you know, i approved of DC marriage so i can oppose this other LGBT legislation...which will anger some of my constituents. frankly, this aspect of the issue is beyond my personal knowledge. and personally, i want it all - now.

jeri. I remember reading a while back that you are transgender?  You said here that it's kind of "tit for tat."  That strikes me as kind of funny (uh, oh, I guess somebody's going to give me a -1 for this comment).  Since you now have 2 real boobies, I guess you really know what you're talking about, don't you??  Teeheeeheee.

Given the pattern of your comments and the fact the Sanchez has not posted at all in this issue of the Blade, I have a sneaking suspicion that you are Sanchez reincarnated!
