The D.C. police department’s Gay & Lesbian Liaison Unit was recently involved in the following cases. The GLLU assists in a wide variety of cases and its involvement does not imply any person or business is gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.

• POLICE ASSISTANCE: A woman requested GLLU assistance Feb. 23 regarding her 17-year-old son. The woman, who lives with her son in Virginia, told police that she learned her son was “engaging in online sexual cruising with men much older than he” and was meeting the men “for sexual liaisons.” The woman also told police that one of the men was “contacting the son inappropriately” and would not stop. Local police were notified and the woman and son were referred to counseling.

• ASSAULT: Police were called Feb. 22 at 9:30 p.m. to a bar along the 2100 block of P Street, N.W., to respond to a reported assault. An investigation revealed that a man had been thrown out of the bar after yelling at customers and “using racist and homophobic language.” Officers learned that the man then called police to report he was assaulted by bar employees. Officers were unable to substantiate the man’s report.

• ROBBERY: Police were called Feb. 21 at 11:30 p.m. to K Street, N.E., to respond to a reported robbery. A woman, who police described as “a member of the transgender community,” told officers that a man propositioned her and she refused his advances. The woman also told police that the man then grabbed her and stole an undetermined amount of money. The man was located and arrested.

• PROPERTY DAMAGE: Police were called Feb. 21 at midnight to the 1700 block of 17th Street, N.W., to respond to reported property damage. Officers found a 27-year-old male suspect and stopped him. An investigation revealed that after threatening customers “using racist and homophobic” epithets inside two nearby bars, the man was thrown out of both locations. Officers learned that the man then attempted to damage vehicles and signs in the area using a metal pole and brick. The man, who was heavily intoxicated, was arrested and charged with making threats.

• ASSAULT: Police were called Feb. 20 at 4 p.m. to an apartment along the 1300 block of Euclid Street, N.W., to respond to a reported assault. Officers found several people inside the building “who identified themselves as members of the transgender community.” One woman told police that another person stole money from her and had attempted to stab her with a knife. Officers received conflicting witness statements, however, and were unable to substantiate the woman’s report.

• PROSTITUTION: Police were called Feb. 19 at 2 a.m. to the 4100 block of 14th Street, N.W., to respond to a reported prostitution-related complaint. A man told police that he had visited “a known house of prostitution, where he engaged in consensual sex acts with a member of the transgender community” in exchange for money. The man told police that when he learned the person was “a biological male,” he demanded his money back. When the “service provider” refused, the man called police. No report was taken, but members of the Metropolitan Police Department’s Prostitution Enforcement Unit were to investigate.

Anyone who has been the victim of a crime or has knowledge of a crime is encouraged to contact the GLLU on its 24-hour pager at 1-877-495-5995. Visit the GLLU at www.gllu.org.
