Milton Stern
Local gay author Milton Stern will be at Lambda Rising Tuesday to
discuss and read from his new book, “Michael’s Secrets.” The book is a
follow-up to his novel “On Tuesdays, They Played Mah Jongg.”
His other books include “Harriet Lane, America’s First Lady,” an
extensive biography of the niece of lifelong bachelor President James
Buchanan. She acted as his first lady from 1857 to 1861.
Stern also has a gay erotica alter-ego, Kosher Man, under which he writes short stories for anthologies.
Lambda Rising is located at 1625 Connecticut Ave., N.W. The event begins at 6:30 p.m.
WWC Fire & Ice
Whitman-Walker Clinic will hold its 16th annual Fire & Ice fundraising event tonight at the Corcoran Gallery of Art.
General admission to the main event includes admission with a
complimentary full bar and hors d’oeuvres. VIP admission includes
premium seating reservations and entry to Maya Lin’s “Systematic
Landscapes” exhibit during the event.
The reception features performances by jazz vocalist Sara Jones, first
place winner of the 2004 Billie Holiday Vocal Competition, and the
Chris Grasso Trio, along with music from DJ Tim Mykael.
‘Through a Glass, Darkly’
The Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington will kick off Capital Pride with
performances of “Through a Glass, Darkly,” a look at the impact of
methamphetamine on gay lives.
For the first half of the event, the chorus will sing a tribute to
friends and lovers. The East Coast premiere of “Through a Glass,
Darkly” will follow.
“Through a Glass, Darkly” was composed by Michael Shaieb for three
actors, dancers and chorus. It deals with crystal meth addiction in the
gay community by focusing on a young man and its impact on his life.
The score combines electronica and traditional choral singing.
Tickets are on sale now through the Lisner Auditorium box office, 730 21st St., N.W., and through www.gmcw.org. Showtimes are June 6 at 8 p.m. and June 7 at 3 p.m.

RuPaul to headline Capital Pride
The Capital Pride committee announced this week that drag queen RuPaul,
of the TV show, “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” will be the headliner at this
year’s event.
“This year we wanted to find an entertainer that embodied our theme,
Generations of Pride: Celebrate and Remember – Stonewall at 40,” Dyana
Mason, executive director of Capital Pride, said in a statement. “We
believe RuPaul is the perfect entertainer to help us celebrate the 40th
anniversary of Stonewall. Drag queens and transgender people helped
lead the events of Stonewall, and through RuPaul’s appearance we are
honoring that tradition. She’s also simply fabulous.”
RuPaul will close out the main stage entertainment on Sunday, June 14, at the street festival on Pennsylvania Avenue.
Chelsea Handler of the E! show, “Chelsea Lately,” will be the Grand
Marshall for the parade on Saturday, June 13, along with Guy Branum and
Valerie Harper.
