Three years after first running for state office in Maryland,
transgender activist Dana Beyer is considering throwing her hat back
into the ring.
“I’m not officially running yet, and I’m not going to make a decision
until I see how fundraising goes,” she said. “But I’m thinking about it
and have been planning on it for several years.”
A fundraiser for Beyer’s possible campaign as a District 18 state
delegate was held Wednesday at the Washington home of Human Rights
Campaign board member John Isa.
The event began after Blade deadline. Lane Hudson, a coordinator, said
about 30 to 50 people were expected to attend. Tickets began at $50.
Beyer, who ran for a state delegate seat in 2006, is senior adviser to
Montgomery County Council member Duchy Trachtenberg and vice president
of Equality Maryland’s board.
Beyer said she did “extremely well” during her 2007 campaign, and that
it “makes perfect sense to finish the job next year.” She estimated
that she would need $150,000 for her campaign.
Beyer said she was motivated to run because she sees “a need in
Maryland now, particularly in the shadow of a new, hopeful
administration, to bring progressive politics to our state.”
