The D.C. police department’s Gay & Lesbian Liaison Unit was recently involved in the following cases. The GLLU assists in a wide variety of cases and its involvement does not imply any person or business is gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.
• ASSAULT: Police were called June 15 at 4:15 p.m. to the 1200 block of Brentwood Road, N.E., to respond to a reported assault. A juvenile, who suffered minor head and facial injuries, told police another group of juveniles attacked him and called him “homophobic names.” The juvenile declined to identify his attackers.
• ASSAULT: Police working the Capital Pride festival detail were alerted June 14 at 5:30 p.m. to a fight along the 400 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W. Officers found the involved parties, but were unable to determine who started the fight. Neither party wished to pursue criminal charges and no arrests were made.
• THREATS: Police were called June 14 at 1:30 p.m. to the 1300 block of R Street, N.W., to respond to reported threats. A bicyclist told police that he was crossing the street when a vehicle nearly struck him. The man said he confronted the motorist and struck the vehicle with his hand, and the motorist responded “by threatening to kill the bicyclist” and “using homophobic epithets” toward him. The man was unable to provide a description of the vehicle.
• INJURED PERSON: Police working the Capital Pride parade detail were alerted June 13 at 11 p.m. to an injured person along the 1400 block of 17th Street, N.W. The injured man, who was intoxicated, was found to have hurt his leg after falling down stairs. The man was taken to a local hospital.
• INTOXCIATED PERSON: Police working the Capital Pride parade detail were alerted June 13 at 10 p.m. to an intoxicated person along the 1400 block of 17th Street, N.W. A highly intoxicated woman was found along the sidewalk. She was taken to a local hospital for detoxification.
• ASSAULT: Police were called June 10 at 5:45 p.m. to the 1800 block of Mintwood Place, N.W., to respond to a reported assault. A man, who suffered minor scratches to his knees and elbows, told police he was walking along the block when a bicyclist “made homophobic comments” toward the man and slapped him. A brief struggle ensued and the suspect fled the scene. The suspect was described as a black teenager wearing a black shirt.
• POLICE ASSISTANCE: A person residing along the 1400 block of Rhode Island Avenue, N.W., requested police assistance June 9 regarding a dispute with a neighbor. The person told police the neighbor “has made homophobic comments” and requested advice on how to prevent “any further homophobic outbursts.”
• POLICE ASSISTANCE: A woman requested police assistance June 6 at 5:45 p.m. regarding a dispute at a restaurant along the 600 block of H Street, N.W. The woman, who identified herself to police “as a male-to-female member of the transgender community,” told police she was asked to use the men’s restroom and wanted the owners “advised of the D.C. Human Rights Act.” Officers resolved the dispute.
• ASSAULT: Police were called June 1 at 2 a.m. to Howard University Hospital to take an assault report. A man, who suffered minor facial injuries, told police he was in line at a bar along the 1700 block of I Street, N.W., to use the restroom when someone cut in line and used the restroom ahead of him and others.
