The D.C. police department’s Gay & Lesbian Liaison Unit was recently involved in the following cases. The GLLU assists in a wide variety of cases and its involvement does not imply any person or business is gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.
• POLICE ASSISTANCE: A man requested GLLU assistance June 21 at 11:30 p.m. regarding handling a domestic violence situation. The man told police he was attempting to get assistance for his boyfriend, who is addicted to crystal meth. The couple lives in the Columbia Heights neighborhood.
• VERBAL ATTACK: Police were called June 21 at 2:30 a.m. to the 3500 block of 14th Street, N.W., to respond to a call for help. A woman “who identified herself as a member of the transgender community” told police she was working in the area when three men approached her. She said one of the men yelled “homophobic and racist remarks” at her. A report was taken to document the bias-related incident.
• DISPUTE: Police were called June 20 at 3:30 a.m. to a home in the 1400 block of Belmont Street, N.W., to respond to a reported dispute. Two men told an officer they were boyfriends and arguing about finances. No criminal allegations were made.
• ASSAULT: Police were called June 18 at 6 p.m. to the 5300 block of Wisconsin Avenue, N.W., to respond to a reported assault. An officer found a man suffering from “respiratory distress and temporary blindness” caused by a pepper spray or mace. The man told police he was riding Metro, approaching the Tenleytown Station, when a group of three “male-to-female transgender juveniles” began to act loudly on the train. The man said when he confronted the juveniles, they cursed at him and one of them sprayed him with an unknown liquid. The juveniles then fled on foot. The victim received medical treatment at the scene.
• ASSAULT: Police were called June 17 at 5:30 p.m. to an apartment along the 5100 block of Just Street, N.E., to respond to a reported assault. An officer found the victim and suspect, who are both juveniles. An investigation revealed the suspect became angry with the victim, her girlfriend, when she found a photo of the victim with another female on the Internet. The suspect attacked the victim, scratching her face. The victim refused medical attention and the suspect was arrested.
• POLICE ASSISTANCE: Members of the GLLU assisted the D.C. police department’s Intelligence Branch on June 16 to investigate “threats against a member of the faith-based community.” The investigation is ongoing.
