The D.C. police department’s Gay & Lesbian Liaison Unit was recently involved in the following cases. The GLLU assists in a wide variety of cases and its involvement does not imply any person or business is gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.
• PROPERTY DAMAGE: Police were notified Aug. 21 at 3 p.m. of reported property damage. A woman who lives along the 4000 block of Anacostia Avenue, N.E., told police that her rental car was damaged and broken into, but nothing was stolen. She also told police that she believed the damage was caused “because she is a lesbian,” but could provide no evidence to support the claim.
• ASSAULT: Police were called Aug. 20 at 2:45 a.m. to the 3300 block of Georgia Avenue to respond to a reported assault. A man told police his boyfriend assaulted him. The victim also said his boyfriend damaged the victim’s vehicle using a baseball bat. The victim, who suffered minor injuries, refused medical attention. The suspect was arrested at the scene.
• VERBAL ATTACK: Police were notified Aug. 16 at 2:45 a.m. of a reported verbal attack. A woman told police that she had entered a cab in the area of Eighth and E streets, S.E., and requested transportation to an address in Northwest D.C. Once at the destination, the woman said she and her female companion got into an argument with the cab driver. The woman said the cab driver “used homophobic and sexist language” in the argument. Police referred the woman to the D.C. Taxi Commission and the office of Human Rights.
• ASSAULT: Police were called Aug. 12 at 3 p.m. to the area of Pomeroy Road and Sheridan Street, S.E., to respond to a reported assault. A juvenile female and her companions told police they were confronted by another group of juvenile females, who harassed them and used “homophobic epithets.” One of the suspects allegedly slapped the victim in the face, at which time the victim picked up a rock to defend herself. The suspects then fled. The victim was not injured.
• POLICE ASSISTANCE: A woman requested police assistance Aug. 12 regarding a dispute occurring along the 800 block of 21st Street, N.E. The woman, who police described as a “male-to-female transgender citizen,” said the responding officers failed to provide the assistance she had requested after officers determined no criminal offense was committed. Police provided the woman information on filing a complaint against a police officer.
• ASSAULT: An alleged assault occurred Aug. 9 at 8:30 p.m. outside a bar near 17th and R streets, N.W. A man told police that he became involved in “a verbal altercation” with several other men outside the bar. The man said another man at one point “used a homophobic epithet” and punched his face, breaking his nose. The man did not report the incident until Aug. 18.
• ASSAULT: Police were called Aug. 4 at 4:30 a.m. to the area behind 75 I St., N.W., to respond to a reported assault. Officers found a man suffering minor injuries. The man told police he had met another man while leaving a bar in the area of 17th and Penn streets, N.W., and they had gone to the area behind 75 I St., N.W. Once at the location, the suspect attacked the victim, rendering him unconscious. The victim told police that he might have been sexually assaulted. The victim was taken to a local hospital.
• ROBBERY: Police were called Aug. 2 at 12:30 a.m. to the area of 21st and K streets, N.W., to respond to a reported robbery. Officers found a man suffering minor injuries. The man told police he was walking to his parked vehicle when two men approached him, “made a homophobic” remark and struck the man, rendering him unconscious. Upon regaining consciousness, the man found he had been robbed and his vehicle stolen. The man refused medical attention. The vehicle was later recovered.
