'You've been had'

Twitter users are responding fiercely today to news that the U.S. Justice Department is defending in court the federal Defense of Marriage Act.

Although many gay legal experts had frowned upon the case in question and didn't expect it to go anywhere, many Twitter users made it clear they strongly opposed the Obama administration's efforts to keep DOMA in place. Here's a sampling of the anger and disappointment:

@lesbiandad: My 5 stages of grief over Obama's DOMA backstabbing: denial > anger > bargaining > anger > ANGER.

@OxyChaz: Gays who supported Obama b/c of his position on LGBT issues - you've been had. He's now on record as supporting DOMA.

@stevecubbage: WOW, We might have [expletive deleted] up another election.. Defedning DOMA, Obama?? RLY!?

@wonderwillow: Obama's position on DOMA kind of makes me want to throw up a little

@stacjean1: Obama, our "fierce" advocate who campaigned to repeal DOMA just went out of his way to defend it... am speachless...

@CJHatter: Just heard th news. If ur not OUTRAGED w/ Obama over DOMA ur not paying attn!

@lid86: WHAT THE [expletive deleted] IS HRC TALKING TO OBAMA ABOUT, THEN? THE [expletive deleted] WEATHER?

@the_nini: JFC Obama, what the shit is this shit?!

@hildeborg: "What upsets me is not that you lied to me, but that from now on I can no longer believe you." Nietzsche. Prfct quote 4 Obama defending DOMA

These girls will have a GOP Candidate who will come along and tell them "YES I WANT YOU ALL TO HAVE MARRIAGE EQUALIY" And the girls will scream and vote for them and then when the GOP re-takes office. Lets see if anything GAY is heard I bet it won't.

And regardless she stood behind Bill and supported him on all of those acts he proposed (D.A.DT & D.O.MA)and got signed. So hon please just green , Libertarian, or Republican. The vote will not be missed!pan style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">

Rick, do you think that you can let us know which book?  I would think Audacity, but I don't want to assume.  And if you could be specific about where in the book to which you are referring, that would be great (because I don't remember reading anything that would make me question him as you say you do).  I don't want to be one of those folks that's uninformed when I make a comment... :)

Both John McCain and Barack Obama said they
supported civil unions. In one of  his books, Barack
Obama said things which made me question his true
support for LGBT civil rights. In addition, John McCain's
daughter as well as Dick Cheney have come out in support of Gay marriage. Maybe Barack Obama is not
everything people expected him to be??

It seems to me that same-sex marriage wont' get far until gay men stop infecting each other with HIV. Put your money where your mouth is and do what you say you'll when you get married.  Practice monogamy. When HIV transmission rates drop same-sex marriage will be accepted as a real possibility.

ErikDC is suggesting we wait until some mysterious 'right' time comes along. Sounds like an alcoholic waiting to get sober at the 'right' time. Aren't you sick of waiting for those scummy breeders to allow you to be equal? It will never be the right time! WAKE-UP and smell the coffee. Learn from the riots of the sixties. NO ONE noticed the black movement until cities were burning.

Admit when you're wrong those of you that voted for Obama . Our current secretary of state did not say "I believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman."  Yet you voted for Obama. He told you what he believes and you still voted for him No whining please. Hillary told you she believes in the rights of the GLBT community and many proclaimed "look what her husband did by introducing DOMA." Yes that was HER HUSBAND, not her. So my clarvoyant friends- go tune up that broken sixth sense, it has screwed you again.

If you, the voting GLBT community, couldn't see this coming you need some designer glasses so you can see how gullible you really are. The only change you'll get is from a vending machine. The really sad thing is most of you will vote for him again.

1: The DOMA case has not yet made it to court, the DOJ was supposedly filing for dismissal based on jurisdiction. No defense necessary. The DOJ chose to go the extra mile and vigorously defend DOMA as well.

2: It isn't simply the defense of an existing law that has the Community up in arms - it's the arguments that the DOJ has made in that defense; such as equating the recognition of CA's SSM's to the recognition of incestuous and under-age marriages. That is what we are pissed about!

Hey Josh,

Shred Obama all you want but guess what hon? I'd  say a lot of the people who voted were like me: we didn't vote for Obama. We voted AGAINST McCain and Palin, who would have been the power behind the Presidency.

You think McCain and co were going to be advocates of gay marriage? The extreme right had sucked away any moderate and maverick attitude McCain had and DOMA would have been strengthened. But yes, talk about how we were fools and how we should have voted for the wingnuts controlling McCain the puppet.

So we wait for  how many years before we decide to sue for our rights? This may be our best chance. The justices up for retirement are liberal. At best Obama will get a chance to replace liberal justices with maybe liberal justices. (Scalia and Thomas won't be going anywhere anytime soon.)

The case needs to be thrown out so it doesn't reach the Supreme Court. These Twitter users simply don't understand the politics behind this. If we take a case to the high court prematurely and lose like we did in Bowers, it'll take 2 decades to undue the damage from that..
