There's lots of news to share in the dining world, which seems to have re-awakened after a slow summer. I'm headed to the Point of View bar at the W Hotel (which won the Best of Gay D.C. award this year for Best Hotel bar) in a couple hours to try their new warm winter cocktails, so check back here for a report on that later.
• Last night I had dinner at Equinox to meet Tom Wellings, the new pastry chef, and while there I learned that the bar is repurposing Halloween candy and turning it into cocktails. Available all week — until the candy runs out — look for special drinks, like the Jolly Rancher martini made with different Jolly Rancher flavors, a Fizzy Bazooka, which tastes and smells exactly like the bubblegum, and a delicious Atomic Fireball hot chocolate spiked with bourbon. The cocktails are available from 5-7 p.m.
• Virginia Willis, a chef and author of Bon Appétit, Y'all: Recipes and Stories from Three Generations of Southern Cooking, will be in town this weekend for a cooking demo at L'Academie de Cuisine's Bethesda location. Willis is a lesbian, and her resume also includes a stint as kitchen director on Martha Stewart Living.
At Friday night's class at 7 p.m., Willis will be demonstrating how to make French onion soup with bacon flan, mustard crusted pork loin with pan sauce, grits and greens, and Georgia pecan brownies with crème fraîche. Online registration for the $85 class is closed, so call 301-986-9460 for more info.
• Mark your calendars for the Taste of Dupont, which will be held November 17 from 6-9 p.m. The annual event is taking on a different format this year: instead of restaurants bringing sample tastes to one location, attendees will visit individual restaurants for a sample to create their own progressive dinner. Tickets are $5 for a tasting, or $20 for 5. Some restaurants participating are Urbana, Pizzeria Paradiso, Level One and new spot Eola. Visit the website for a full list of participating restaurants.
• Bakers may want to head to Art and Soul (the D.C. restaurant by esteemed chef Art Smith, who is gay) for a pie making class on November 14. Pastry Chef Lauren Whitledge will be sharing tips on how to make a variety of piecrusts and fillings. Participants receive the recipes from the class and a Babypie to take home. The class is at 3 p.m. and $40 per person. To register, visit www.artandsouldc.com and click on the special events tab.
• The Guest House at Lost River in West Virginia (which won the Best of Gay D.C.'s Best Weekend Getaway award) is hosting a culinary weekend, with a five-course Italian wine dinner with chef Roberto Donna this Friday night and a five-course cooking class on Saturday. The dinner is $160 and the class is $110. The cooking class includes wine, apron and recipes. To make reservations for the wine dinner and/or cooking class, call 202-257-0168 or email tambolisa1@aol.com.
