In the wake of Maine's vote against same-sex marriage, we asked on Twitter whether it's "time to set aside marriage and make the more pragmatic push for civil unions?" The answers are reproduced below in the order they were received.
@moosep (Raleigh, N.C.) I say yes. We should push for civil unions that are equal to marriage in all but name.
@tdprestridge (Washington, D.C.) ABSOLUTELY NOT! We should not settle 4 civil unions just because we lose another vote. We must keep fighting for equality!
@AfricanAmAIDS (Philadelphia, Pa.) I agree, civil unions with FULL benefits in every way would actually be more productive and protective for gay couples..IMO
@ElyssaK (Washington, D.C.) No. Civil unions can be viewed as a baby step or viewed as a lesser win. You are not 2nd class citizens! Don't act like it.
@StyxNStones (near D.C.) We need to ask for everything. Complete equality. Repeal DOMA! Repeal DADT! Marriage Equality NOW!
@cjhdgs (Columbia, Md.) Never back down, always set your demands higher than you think you can reach because you're bound to get closer in the end.
@TweetwithStone (New York City) Hell No! It is not time to stop pushing for marriage! Its time to dispel the myths of Gays as a harm to society.
@dmcrawford (Washington, D.C.) Put down the pipe and pick up arms to fight for full equality including marriage. No to civil unions.
@ErwindeLeon (Washington, D.C.) I'd say look at civil unions/marriage state by state. Bottomline, the more of either, the harder for Fed govt to ignore.
@ErwindeLeon (Washington, D.C.) Also, be good to have many states w/ either union or marriage before Boies case goes before Supreme Court.
@NGblog (New York City) To quote Larry Kramer, don't accept crumbs.
@jemel2 (Columbia, Md.) my thought is as long as I get ALL the rights as straight couples they can call it whatever the heck they want
@tjpoisal (Owings, Md.) SETTLE for a civil union? FUCK THAT! What did black people do during segregation? SETTLE... I THINK NOT!
@brettandriesen (Washington, D.C.) no - don't retreat based on a couple losses.
@jolliam (North America) Maybe - only in that civil unions must be asserted as a STEP toward full equality, not the end result.
@jolliam (North America) I wrote that last tweet and immediately regretted it. I can't, I won't, compromise on full equality.
@meaghang (Washington, D.C.) interesting debate, but aren't civil unions like the Three-Fifths compromise? Does this mean real equality will wait?
