When I started high school in 1999, I was the only openly gay person at my school. I had just come out to my friends, and even in rural Oklahoma I was accepted among my close network of friends.

I quickly realized this was a rare exception and that across the country gay and lesbian teenagers were not treated as well as I had been. In fact, when I left that school with my family in 2000 to begin my sophomore year at a Wisconsin high school, I began to face real harassment head on.
President Obama recently made a historic pledge on gay rights that moved our country closer to that original promise of “liberty and justice for all.”

In my Washington, D.C., neighborhood, gays are not only “out” but out and about: Same-sex couples hold hands on the street and laugh and chat at tables in restaurants. The Washington Blade article last week on the taxicab scandal and the indictment of Ted Loza was upsetting and disappointing.
In a condescending put-down of the National Equality March, Toni Broaddus gives the national community some very bad advice. Broaddus urges the grassroots LGBT folks who were energized by passage of Proposition 8 to ditch plans for a march on D.C. and converge on Maine instead. This is a false dichotomy: It is possible to support equality in Maine while joining the national LGBT community in the first coming-together in Washington of the 21st century. Thanks very much for your update on the gay Iraqi story. I'm heartened to hear that Hussam was shown to be a liar, although I'm dismayed that the retraction of his story hasn't received any further coverage in the wider media. As one of the lead organizers for the LGBT community's first two marches on Washington in 1979 and 1987, my ears perked up when I heard there were plans for a new one. I checked out David Mixner's web site where the new “National Equality March” was announced, ostensibly for and by the LGBT community, although the name of the event was devoid of any such reference.
The date was set, as was an overarching statement of purpose, but unlike the earlier actions, there would be no specific demands. Despite rhetoric invoking the “grassroots,” it appears the leadership already had been decided: Mixner, and a few self-select ...
