By KATHERINE VOLIN
Friday, November 02, 2007
If you don't work on or near the Mall, it's easy to forget that tourism is Washington's second largest industry, coming in right behind government work, and according to a recent study, D.C. is one of the top-10 gay destinations in the country.

Victoria Isley, senior vice-president of marketing for the Washington D.C. Convention & Tourism Corporation, says that 15 million people visit D.C. each year. Since 1999, Isley's organization has worked to make sure that a significant portion of that group is gay, making D.C. one of the first American cities to court the gay tourist.
Friday, January 19, 2007

My first visit to San Diego came, unfortunately, during the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Staying in town for a work-related conference, I spent the majority of my time worrying about family and friends on the East Coast and struggling to get back home to Washington, D.C., — an epic adventure of its own. So it was wonderful to get a second, less stressful, chance to discover what this seaside southern California city is all about.

San Diego has a reputation for being a conservative city. It neighbors the politically conservative Orange County and is home to a large portion of the U.S. Navy's Pacific Fleet as well as one of the nation's two Marine training bases. About on ...

Ever since Georgie's Alibi bar opened on April 3, 1997, the gay crowds have flocked to Wilton Manors, Fla., the hub of gay and lesbian life in the Fort Lauderdale region. Hurricane Wilma didn't even shut it down.

“We opened a few hours later that day,” recalled Alibi owner George Kessinger. The Alibi shipped in about 1,900 pounds of ice from its sister bar in St. Petersburg, Fla., and kept the party going with generators, candles and a boom box through the nearly two-week blackout of Wilton Manors that followed the storm last October. Alibi, whose restaurant serves lunch and dinner, is open from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. 365 days a year, Kessinger said.

Determined to find love and my one true dance partner in life, I consistently found myself dancing alone to the same sad love songs.
