The Gay & Lesbian Liaison Unit of D.C. Metro Police offers these suggestions for gays who meet others online (continued from last week's edition).

Meet in public — This gives you both the opportunity to meet and feel comfortable before moving forward. The public place should be well lit and populated. If you don't feel comfortable being seen in gay locales, choose a mall, convenience store or other place where there is foot traffic.

Have an escape plan — Before you leave for the encounter, think about how you will end it if it does not feel right. Have a friend call at a certain time to see if things are OK. If they're not, use the call as an ex ...

Members of the Gay & Lesbian Liaison Unit of D.C. Metro Police say the number of calls they get about people who've been victimized after meeting someone online increases in the summer months. Theft, assault (sexual and non-sexual), fraud and identity theft are common in the gay community.

GLLU members recommend those who use the Internet to meet others take the following precautions.

Stay sober: Drinking and consuming drugs impairs judgment and increases the likelihood a person will be victimized. If you do drink in these situations, know your limits.

Go with your gut instinct: If something doesn't seem right about an encounter, leave. Be aware of your surrou ...
