Sen. Brownback offers to lift hold if judge avoids same-sex marriage cases
Nominee said she was not at ceremony in official capacity

Kansas Senator Sam Brownback says he'll lift his hold on a federal judicial nominee from Michigan if she avoids cases dealing with same-sex unions.

Brownback is a Republican raising money for a possible White House bid. He has stalled the confirmation of Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Janet Neff to the federal bench because she once attended a lesbian commitment ceremony.

Neff has said she attended the ceremony as a friend of one of the two women, a longtime neighbor. She wrote Brownback in October to say the ceremony would not affect her ability to act fairly as a federal judge.

Brownback is a prominent gay marriage opponent. Neff hasn't spoken publicly about her nomination.
