Gov. Jim Douglas says he will oppose a bill to allow same-sex couples to marry in Vermont. In
some of his strongest criticism to the idea yet, the Republican
governor says he'd rather lawmakers not take up the issue this year,
instead focusing on the economy.
Douglas
says he believes Vermont's law allowing same-sex couples to enter civil
unions is sufficient to provide equal rights to gay and lesbian
Vermonters.
He says he's also concerned about the divisiveness of the issue.
