Gay couple detained by security near Mormon plaza after kiss
Told public displays of affection not allowed on property

A gay couple say they were detained by security guards on a plaza owned by the Mormon church and later cited by police, claiming it stemmed from a kiss on the cheek.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said that the men became argumentative and refused to leave after being asked to stop their "inappropriate behavior." The men say they were targeted because they are gay.

Matt Aune said he and his partner, Derek Jones, were walking home from a concert nearby on Thursday night, cutting through the plaza near the Salt Lake City Mormon temple.

Aune, 28, said he gave Jones, 25, a hug and kiss and that the two were then approached by a security guard, who asked them to leave, telling them they were being inappropriate and that public displays of affection aren't allowed on the property. He said other guards arrived and the men were handcuffed.

"We asked what we were doing wrong," Aune told The Associated Press.

Church spokeswoman Kim Farah said in a statement Friday that the men were "politely asked to stop engaging in inappropriate behavior — just as any other couple would have been."

"They became argumentative and used profanity and refused to leave the property," she said. The church did not immediately respond to a request for more comment.

Police later arrived and both men were cited with misdemeanor trespassing, Salt Lake City Police Sgt. Robin Snyder said.

"It doesn't matter what they were asked to leave for," Snyder said. "If they are asked to leave and don't they are ... trespassing."

The church has been the target of protests over its support of a ban on gay marriage in California.

Quotemushroomhead: Public displays of affection are foul, be they str8 or gay.  All the two guys needed to do in this case were to say ok, apologize for their actions contrary to Mormon doctrine, and take their lips and tongues back to the hotel room; instead I suspect they put on a hissie fit - how gauche.  No one needs to see anyone (str8 or gay) stick their tongues down someone else's throat, or any of the thousands of other PDAs I've seen over the years.  They can do what they want behind closed doors - not where everyone else needs to see and puke.

Why are you here?  Do you enjoy repeatedly making an ass of yourself?  Grow up.

It's time for the Moron crutch to put a fence around their whorehouse and post guards so that only entities with Moron passports are allowed to cross their patch.

It was a kiss on the check not and a case of sticking tongues down each other's throats. Read the damn article. Even if it was, they had nothing to apologize for. They have nothing to be sorry about. Just because you're so damn ashamed of your own sexuality and a prude doesn't mean everyone else has to be. There is nothing dirty or wrong with a kiss. A kiss is a beautiful thing. The Victorian era is dead. If you care to live there don't expect the rest of us to follow suit. Of course you wouldn't do that in public since no one in their right mind would want to kiss your foul face or dirty mouth anyway. I can imagine the foul puke breath that disgusts everyone.

Quotewjf: Mushroomhead: There you go again – and true to form – always taking the anti-gay side. You invent an entire scenario and then argue as if it happened. You truly are amazing. On issue after issue that supports the community -- you are consistently the advocate of the other side. Foolish boy.

They violated policy, i.e., PDAs in public, that are applicable to ANYONE.  Surely you don't believe gay people deserve special treatment or that they should be excused because they're gay, do you??
