Senate to hear ENDA testimony
Witnesses announced for Nov. 5 hearing

A Senate committee is set to hear testimony next week on pending legislation that would prohibit employment discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

The Senate Health, Education, Labor & Pensions Committee on Nov. 5 at 10 a.m. will hear testimony on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) is the sponsor of the legislation in Senate, which currently has 40 co-sponsors.

On the House side, gay Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) is the sponsor of companion legislation, which has 189 co-sponsors. The House Education & Labor Committee held a hearing on the legislation in September. A markup is expected soon, but is not yet scheduled.

The title of the hearing is “Employment Non-Discrimination Act: Ensuring Opportunity for All Americans.” Witnesses for the hearing were announced Tuesday and are as follows:

  • Tom Perez, assistant attorney general, civil rights division, U.S. Department of Justice, Washington, D.C.
  • Helen Norton, associate professor of law, University of Colorado School of Law, Boulder, Colo.
  • Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, Chicago, Ill.
  • Virginia Nguyen, diversity and inclusion team member, Nike, Inc., Beaverton, Ore.
  • Mike Carney, police officer, City of Springfield Police Department, Springfield, Mass.
  • Craig Parshall, senior vice president and general counsel, National Religious Broadcasters Association, Manassas, Va.
  • Camille Olson, partner, Seyfarth Shaw, LLP, Chicago, Ill.

Actually, it's 41 co-sponsors, plus Merkley, so that is 42 total. You can see this at thomas.loc.gov if you search S1584. It's a bit confusing, so you're forgiven, as I was confused about it myself for quite a while. There are 50 total confirmed yes votes according to the Inclusive ENDA Facebook group, and 56 likely yes votes. You can see the spreadsheet here: http://bit.ly/14TDll
