A Senate committee is set to hear testimony next week on pending
legislation that would prohibit employment discrimination based on sexual
orientation and gender identity.
The Senate Health, Education, Labor & Pensions Committee on
Nov. 5 at 10 a.m. will hear testimony on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.
Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) is the sponsor of the legislation in Senate, which
currently has 40 co-sponsors.
On the House side, gay Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) is the sponsor
of companion legislation, which has 189 co-sponsors. The House Education &
Labor Committee held a hearing on the legislation in September. A markup is
expected soon, but is not yet scheduled.
The title of the hearing is “Employment Non-Discrimination Act:
Ensuring Opportunity for All Americans.” Witnesses for the hearing were announced Tuesday and are as follows:
- Tom Perez, assistant attorney general, civil rights division, U.S. Department of Justice, Washington, D.C.
- Helen Norton, associate professor of law, University of Colorado School of Law, Boulder, Colo.
- Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, Chicago, Ill.
- Virginia Nguyen, diversity and inclusion team member, Nike, Inc., Beaverton, Ore.
- Mike Carney, police officer, City of Springfield Police Department, Springfield, Mass.
- Craig Parshall, senior vice president and general counsel, National Religious Broadcasters Association, Manassas, Va.
- Camille Olson, partner, Seyfarth Shaw, LLP, Chicago, Ill.
