The New York State Senate has delayed voting on a bill that would legalize same-sex marriage in the state, according to the New York Times.
New York Gov. David Paterson (D) called the New York Legislature into a special session on Tuesday and included a bill to legalize same-sex marriage on the agenda.
However, the Senate is not required to vote on items the governor puts on the agenda, and lawmakers reportedly decided not to take up the measure on Tuesday.
The Times reported that lawmakers decided to put off the vote because there are insufficient votes at this time for passage.
It’s unclear when the Senate would take up the measure for a vote, according to the Times, but with the Veteran's Day holiday Wednesday, the soonest the Senate could take up the measure would be the end of this week.
Approval in the Senate is the last major obstacle in passing same-sex marriage legislation in New York. In May, the New York Assembly passed legislation that would grant marriage rights to same-sex couples with a vote of 89-52. Paterson has pledged to sign the bill if it reaches his desk.
