R.I. gov vetoes gay funeral planning
Carcieri says proposal represents 'disturbing trend'

A gay rights group plans to meet with Rhode Island's governor, who this week vetoed legislation allowing same-sex couples to plan the funerals of their partners.

Susan Heroux, a member of Queer Action of Rhode Island, said the meeting with Gov. Don Carcieri has been scheduled for 3 p.m. Thursday.

In a written statement, Heroux accused Carcieri of raising money for a "hate group" and said the governor's veto was motivated by "bigotry."

Carcieri spokeswoman Amy Kempe declined to comment on Heroux's criticism.

Carcieri spoke at an October fundraiser for the Massachusetts Family Institute, which opposes gay marriage. He said he vetoed the recent legislation because it represented an erosion of the principles of heterosexual marriage.

The enxt thting this governor will do is call the Phelps maniacs to come to the state.

What else would you expect from someone who has most likely sold his soul to the church that gave the world the hatred of the Jews.  Which the catholic hitler leveraged, to get elected and 50 million died.  The whole church is an abortion

I don't know or care to know this governor.  I spoke to the issue.  Do you have an opinion on the issue, or do you just want to use this avenue for a diatribe against the gov?

So what if he does use this forum as an avenue for a diatribe against the Governor of R.I.? His actions and statement are the issue of the article aren't they? I think the diatribe describes what kind of person he is perfectly because only such a person would be so heartless and callous to express such an opinion.

People like the Governor of Rhode Island disgust me with their callous disregard for the pain of the grieving surviving partner in this regard. And if the deceased has no other surviving family then he/or she is simply disposed of by the state like trash while the surviving parter can't lift a finger legally to do anything about it. And this they justify in the guise of protecting against the erosion of heterosexual marriage? What an outrage!

Talk about government sticking its nose into our business.  Since when did a funeral director care who showed up to plan the funeral?  And that's who does the planning, right?  I've never heard of anything so outrageous!  It is absolutely not the Governor or the legislature's call!
