Curious passersby may have wondered what was going on at
Washington, D.C.'s, Freedom Plaza on May 31 when they saw two men clad in
skimpy red, white and blue bathing suits kissing.
-IMG-It was actually a protest by Mike Brazell and
Christopher McDonough for the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. The
couple works for PETA at the organization's national headquarters in Norfolk,
Va.
Brazell, who was in the Navy for 10 years, said he chose to
promote vegetarianism with PETA because of the meat industry's silence on
animal rights' issues.
"The meat industry has similar policies to the 'Don't Ask
Don't Tell' policy," Brazell said, comparing his forced silence in the
military with the suffering of animals in substandard farming
conditions.
The reactions of passersby ranged from encouraging
words and picture-taking to those who voiced their disagreement about the
affectionate display.
The protest was part of PETA's pre-Gay Pride display of
passion entitled "Vegetarians Make Better Lovers."
Washington, D.C.'s, Capital Pride celebration gets under way
June 10 with a parade followed by the festival on June 11.
